UCLA PARKING STRUCTURE #32 gets an earthquake upgrade and underpinning, all using MICROPILES

The challenge for August Construction and West Valley Investment, the General Contractor, was to install an underpinning system that could carry the loads of the three story parking structure, and meet the stringent engineering requirements imposed on a school structure.  The solution presented itself when Micropiles became the preferred choice over the pre-designed 24" diameter PILES.  Since the micropiles were designed to take the loading, it simply became the challenge to adopt them to the underpinning system. The low overhead drill was used inside the structure for the 50 micropiles, which were 8" diameter and 40 foot deep.  The tendons, provided by Williams Form Engineering, utilized a 1 3/8" all-thread tendons for the 40 foot depth, grout and post grout lines with valves. During grouting the water table was a significant problem in keeping the post grouting (which can utilize up to 1000 psi) confined to the hole- it wanted to migrate along the water table.  August modified location of the post-grout valves and was able to achieved 400 psi pressures, which was sufficient to provide very good anchors for the required loads.  Three anchors were tested in tension to verify loading values.
