The start of the shoring for the
Torrance Channel in Southern California, which will receive a pre-cast
concrete box enclosing the channel run-off. The result will be a level
pad above the enclosed channel, providing a pedestrian trail and beautifying the
neighborhood.
For the installation of beam and steel plate
for the temporary shoring, the city and county public officials were very
concerned about noise and especially vibration. The backyards had failed
block walls that were leaning precariously and didn't need too much
vibration to fall over. This prompted the requirement of a demonstration
of the beam installation technique by the inspectors, which showed that
with the pre-drilling, very little vibration was needed to install the
beams and very little vibration was transmitted through the ground.
Additionally, August was able to demonstrate to everyone's satisfaction the
variable moment and power control inherent in the Mobilram unit, which
gave the operator complete control with the vibration. As it was,
full power and 100 percent vibration with predrilled holes did not
transmit sufficient vibrations beyond the hole locality to be of any
concerned. The general contractor Herman
Weissker gave August the green light to vibrate the beams
using the Mobilram variable moment vibrator, and installed the 35 to 40 foot
beams, provided by Trench
Shoring.
